They may have had an Irregular Marriage/Marriage by Declaration, and simply not gone on to have it formalised by a Sheriff's warrant, so couldn't have it  registered.

Hi again,

Shame about the OPR - sadly not all have survived or ever existed in the first place.

There is a George Davidson born circa 1832 on the 1841 Census at Applegarth , Dumfriesshire
He is recorded in the household of Wiiliam Davidson aged 41 Agricultural Labourer and Jannet Davidson aged 40.
There are other children.
Walter - 13
Margaret- 6
Mary - 3
Wilhelmina- 1
And a William Douglas aged 66 - Agricultural Labourer.

This George could be a possibility?

Looby  :)

Apologies I altered the birth year above for George . He is recorded as 9 years old / born circa 1831/2

Have you tried following through on the niece living with George and Janet in 1881? She was also born Scotland. Her mother may have been a sibling of George or Janet.

Four possible births in Scotland using 1865-1870 and with the various spellings, narrowed by female and Wil*.

Added:

Having now seen looby's post above, this one in particular may be of interest:

Another 1841 census that is worth considering, especially as Dornock is so close to Gretna

Interestingly the couple William and Janet Davidson are still at Applegarth on the 1861 Census aged 61 and 60 years old. William is a shepherd.
In their household they have a 5 month old baby living with them called Janet Little - she is recorded as their granddaughter.

Looby :)

Possible parents for the 1868 born Wilhelmina/Williamina:

LITTLE
James

DAVIDSON
Mary

marriage
1859
813/A 4
Applegarth

and could fit with being the 3yr old Mary in 1841 census at Applegrath.
