You may well find associated family for John and or Abigail came over to Scotland around the same time. Thinking this may be a brother for Abigail:

Joseph Cherry 30 Cotton H L W b. Ayrshire
Agnes Cherry 30
John Cherry 10
Samuel Cherry 9
Margaret Cherry 5
Mary Cherry 9 months

Address: Kirklands, Maybole

There is a family tree on Ancestry which gives Abigail's parents as Samuel Cherry and Elizabeth Rodget (surname would fit with what Rosie found on the likely death reg for Abigail on SP).

So, I am wondering if this could be an entry for Abigail's parents in 1841:

Sam Cherry 55 Cotton H L W  b. Ireland
Elizabeth Cherry 45 b. Ireland
John Cherry 20 Cotton H L W  b. Ireland

Address: Balony, Maybole

From the same family tree on Ancestry, John Morrow's parents are given as Alexander Morrow and Margaret White (again, surname of White fits with what Rosie has found).

Possible deaths with mother's maiden name of Rodger in Maybole:

Joseph Cherry aged 67 - 1872
Mary Cherry aged 78 - 1886

Their death certs will include their parents' names, if known to the informant, letting you check whether they were siblings to Abigail.

I think the family have been transcribed as Murray in 1841 (likely writing is complicated). No idea why Abigail is showing as Margaret though  ::) :

John Murray 28 Cotton H L W b. Ireland
Margaret Murray 25
Alexander Murray 6 www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTKW-YLR
Samuell Murray www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTKW-Y3X
Elizabeth Murray 2 www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTK4-S38
Hugh Murray 2 months www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTKW-PY3

Address: Welltrees St, Maybole

Thanks for all the information.

It leaves me still wondering. I have the death certs for James b. 1843 & John b. circa 1824. James died in Belfast in 1880 and his father John in 1901. I thought John's age on the 1851 census might have been wrong, and therefore a possability that this might be a match. John is 37 on the '51 census therefore I was right to presume possible mistakes on his age as 10 years later he is 13 years older, while he is 60 on the '71 census yet a year older 3 years later when he passes away. That is if these John Morrow's are one in the same person?

I looked to Scotland as it seems most of my family lines head back to there and as I had no luck in Ireland was a strong possabilty of Scottish roots. The one thing I will add is that on the later censuses after 1861 there is no John or James, and my ggg-grandfather John 1824-1901 was a flax-dresser presumably in one of the Belfast linen-mills.

Thanks again for all the info.

Terry

Hi Terry

If you have been able to confirm the death of John, James's father, in 1901 Ireland, then the family based in Maybole cannot be the same family. It looks likely that John Morrow living in Maybole died in Scotland (possibly, as Rosie has mentioned, in 1873 Glasgow/Bridgeton).

The John Morrow that died in Belfast, 1901 had a son John, 52, living at the same address & also a Robert, 23, nephew. His son was also a flax dresser.

Also on 1911 census in the Shankill. John gives his age as 69.
