Morrow Family, Maybole
« on: Friday 14 May 21 12:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I believe I may have found my ggg and gg-grandfathers family in Maybole, Ayrshire. Following extensive research in Antrim and Down I drew a blank. Turning my attention to Scotland I found John Morrow, son James on the 1851 Scottish Census. There is no sign of the family in 1861.

My gg-grandfather James was born circa 1843 with my ggg-grandfather John born circa 1824. The family I believe have links to the old York Street Mill in Belfast, with my gg-grandfateher a tailor also in Belfast.

Was wondering if anyone can shed light on this family from Maybole as according to the 1851 census John Morrow's birthplace is Ireland.

Many Thanks

Terry

There was a lot of coming & going between Ayrshire and Ireland.
Have you found the family after 1861?
Is it the same James Morrow on this thread about Letitia & James Morrow?

Historically Maybole was famous for the manufacture of Boots & Shoes, many of the Tanneries and Factories employed Irish workers who settled in Maybole.
Ancient rhyme;
" Minnibole's a dirty hole
it sits abune a mire."
Can't recall the alleged author though I'm sure it wisnae Rabbie Burns who was schooled at Kirkoswald, nearby to Maybole.

Have to head out now....will check again tomorrow but I believe all children are born in Maybole but not sure about Abigail.

The James Morrow in Maybole aged 8 on the 1851 census could be James Morrow's (b. 1875 & married to Lititia Morrow) father, and John his grandfather aged 37 on the census. James Morrow his father b 1843 married to a Sarah Jane McCord in Belfast and grandfather John b circa 1820's, place unknown. John on the 1851 census b 1814, Ireland.

Lucky, lucky  ;)

Their marriage shows on Family Search giving you clues potentially on their origins in Ireland:

John Morrow and Abigail Cherry
23 Nov 1833
Kircubbin, County Down, Ireland

www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V2PT-Q3Z

The first birth in Scotland seems to be son Alexander's in 1836 in Maybole www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V2PT-Q3Z. They should show in Scotland for the 1841 census.

There are 10 children showing for them in the Old Parish Registers and Statutory birth registers.
