James Charles Nottingham b 1874 Lambeth
« on: Friday 14 May 21 16:46 BST (UK) »
James Charles Nottingham was born  14 Mar 1874 @ 50 Regent Street Lambeth; father Charles Nottingham engine fitter mother Sarah Nottingham formerly Dunn. Registered by mother who made her mark. Seem straightforward? Heck no.

Charles Nottingham in 1871 RG10 Piece:665 Folio: 80 Page :   12@ 13 John Street
James Nottingham 54   Head
Elizabeth Nottingham 51   Wife
Charles Nottingham   18   Son
Edwin Nottingham 14   Son
Frances Nottingham 11   Daughter
Sarah Dun 20   Stepdaughter
Alice Dun 17   Stepdaughter
Elizabeth Dunn née Clegg was widowed in 1867 & remarried to James Nottingham. Her 2 daughters Alice & Sarah were living with them.

In 1872 Charles marries Alice Mary Dunn his step-sister, Sarah Dunn is a witness.
Marriages Dec 1872
Dunn    Alice Mary        Lambeth    1d   469
Nottingham    Charles        Lambeth    1d   469
and in 1874 they have Elizabeth Frances
Births Jun 1874
Nottingham    Elizabeth Frances    DUNN    Lambeth    1d   426    who is baptised 9 May St. Mary's Lambeth. James Charles, born same quarter to her husband and sister, is NOT baptised with her.  I can find no baptism or death for him, and no further records.

In 1875 Sarah marries James Tremelling as a spinster; she signs. There appears there never was a marriage for her to Charles so the registration for James Charles Nottingham was not exactly correct.
Marriages Dec 1875
DUNN    Sarah        Lambeth    1d   798
Tremelling    James Humphery        Lambeth    1d   798

Hmmm, so it appears Charles, after his marriage to Alice, conceived a child with her sister Sarah
who is my great grandmother at the same time as conceiving one with his wife.

Can anyone find any records for James Charles? Maybe he was adopted, he doesn't appear with Sarah at any date afterwards.

Thanks for any help.

You were right Kay thank you. Got the death certificate today
30 Jul 1874 @ 13 John Street age 4 months son of Sarah Dunn now wife of Charles Nottingham engine fitter COD Irritation of the bowels, convulsions certified informant Elizabeth Nottingham present at the death same address [this is Sarah's mother who married James Nottingham, Charles' father in 1868] made mark.

In fact Charles Nottingham was the husband of Sarah's sister Louise, they married in 1872, so what was all this obfuscation about?

I would consider the possibility that Charles NOTTINGHAM was not the father of Sarah's child but was used in order to not have to register the child as being illegitimate.  It may have been done with or without his knowledge.

Yes, worth considering, thank you. With the knowledge of Sarah's mother though  ::)
