Place name in Ballantrae, Ayrshire **COMPLETE**
« on: Saturday 15 May 21 08:50 BST (UK) »
I cannot make out the name of the farm in Ballantrae, as given in 1841 census return.
It looks like Thilloch..., but probably starts Hilloch.
Help please.

Seems to be Shillochrak and that is how FreeCEN transcribes it. No sign of it in the OS Namebook for Ballantrae, so may not appear on the map. FreeCEN also transcribes a nearby place as Shillochraik. To find the general area, look at neighbouring properties named in the census and see if they are on the map.

Just looked at the 1855 valuation roll and there is a farm called "Shallochwreck" on it.

Caledonian Mercury, 25 Aug 1842
"James Ferguson, formerly of Wildcatholes, in the Parish of Kilwinning, now residing in Shallochwreck, in the Parish of Ballantrae ..."

1841 Census (as transcribed FindMyPast)
James Ferguson, age 55, born Ayrshire
Address - Shillochrack, Ballantrae

"Shillochrack, Ballantrae" is how FindMyPast have transcribed William Guthrie's address.

Thank you everyone. Very much appreciated. Looks like whoever could write in 1841 would spell it like they said it.
