If it was given verbally Costerley and Costella might sound the same. Which is the correct one would depend on finding any  birth record.

Add - Costella sounds more Italian or Spanish than French.

What does this mean?  Checked what?

Quite usual to have different spellings depending on what people who are recording hear if they are the ones doing the writing.

The birth says Costerley and I am wavering if the marriage says Costello or Costella.  I think they are all trying to say Costello.

I checked the birth entry I have attached to my tree. I thought it said Costelier but when I looked it says Costeller. My original question was could they all be meaning Costello. When I saw Costerley on William's birth certificate I started to have doubts but then maybe the registrar heard Costerley rather than Costello if William's mother had a thick Irish accent?

And apparently the GRO for Mary Ann's sister's birth certificate has their mother down as COSTSLEY!

You might find this of interest: https://www.johngrenham.com/surnamescode/surname_variants_locations.php?surname=costello

Fab thanks! I see Costelagh, Costelogh, Costolae, Costulagh, Custulagh which could arguably sound like Costsley and Costerley if said by an unfamiliar accent to the registrar!
