Cauldry Westmeath. Where is it?
« on: Saturday 15 May 21 22:03 BST (UK) »
Edward Dourley, on joining the 73rd Regiment of Foot in 1824 states that he was born in the parish of
Cauldry in Westmeath.
Apart from a reference to it in 1938, I cannot find the place. Edward was born c.1806.
When he left the army in 1846 he settled in Moate. Could Cauldry be nearby?
Desperate to find Edward's baptism.
Grateful for any help.

Do you think it could be a name that was misheard, like could it be "Cold" something  :-\

You could be right, Millie, but I came across a child's essay of 1938, (via the internet), where she states that people in Ballymore could tell if it was going to rain if the wind was coming from the direction of Cauldry. So it must have existed.
Perhaps it was in a neighbouring county.
Thanks for your reply.

The child’s writing shows Cauldry in inverted commas. I wonder if that is significant  :-\

The nearest I can see is Coolderry, in Offaly and whilst the two counties adjoin, it is some way from the border.

Thanks for all your replies. I saw the reference to Cauldry on the actual document. It was clearly written on Edward Dourley's service records in the British army.
'Parish of Birth  -- Cauldry.
County of Birth -- Westmeath.'

There is another reference to Cauldry in an 1885 article in the Flag of Ireland newspaper. During a meeting of the Irish National League at Athlone, members from Cauldry attended with banners.
 It exists/existed somewhere.
