How to generate list of occupations per surname graph?
« on: Monday 17 May 21 11:32 BST (UK) »
Hello, is there a free internet site that will generate a graph showing the breakdown of occupations for my family surname from the 1891 census please, and draw me a bar graph? If not, does anyone know if I can draw bar graphs using Office or Mac inbuilt software?

I think you'd need to group the occupations. There are standard groupings used by ONS, which are updated regularly - eg

https://www.ons.gov.uk/methodology/classificationsandstandards/standardoccupationalclassificationsoc/soc2020/classifyingthestandardoccupationalclassification2020soc2020totheinternationalstandardclassificationofoccupationsisco08

I would think there are also regional tables - we used to get them in ONS/RG 'Blue books'  It would be best to Google as it's a while since I used them in my research.

Also, it might be best to use Excel .  It really depends what your aim is.

If you don't have access to Excel, you could try one of the free bar chart creator apps - e.g,

https://www.meta-chart.com/bar

All you need to do is work out how detailed you need the occupational classification ( e.g.mining - coal, other or coal mining, above ground, hewers, etc,).  Then tally either manually or by progam and then put the info into the chart ap.

You might want to refine the chart to show male and female occupations differently. In which case, tally females separately from the males and enter  them in as separate categories.

Further to my original question, does anyone know any software or websites that would print a map of the UK with the distribution by country of my family surname according to the 1881 census pls?

There used to be one which was compiled by one of the Universities but that was long ago and I think it;s been taken down.

This might help

It might be worth you Googling.

Archer Software's Surname Atlas does exactly what you're asking:

Ancestry home page (What's In A Name?) does exactly that, but for 1891 census.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)
