Why are some posts labeled with a 'thumbs up,' a frown or a question mark in the left-most column?

Presumably because the person posting wants to add it.  It is the message icon  which is underneath the Subject  on each post which is set to standard.

I know one rootschatter regularly puts them against their post.

I think it's a choice for the OP to use. It's been there for a good while.

Ah, thanks for the explanation.  I never even noticed the icon option; think I'll give it a pass.  It's sort of meaningless, really, to give your own post a thumbs-up.
