Looking for Thomas Gorringe, 1901 Canada.
« on: Tuesday 18 May 21 14:19 BST (UK) »
My 2x Gr grandad Thomas William Gorringe , from Durham in the UK(born 1874) , was in Canada with the military when the 1901 was taken, he had a daughter in 1899 and then another mid 1901 so I know he was there but I can't find the family. His wife was Sarah, also from England.
Would he have not been on the census due to being in the military? They did move back but after 1902.

Sapper Gorring 27 years., Mrs Gorring 26 years and G Gorring 2 years appear on UK Return passenger list - Montreal to Londonderry - June 1901 on the Lake Megantic.

Wonder if Gerturde Mary is recorded in British Army births - 1899 ?

If it was a Nova Scotia birth - Civil registration of births in Nova Scotia began in 1864, continued to 1877, then lapsed until 1908, when the province resumed record-keeping.

Date of Canadian census was 31 March 1901

Thankyou for your replies :) i did find their daughters births but i cannot find the 1901 census they should have been on, from the voyage record you posted it was in June which was after the census was taken so they must have been in Canada around the time, would him being in the army make a difference on it being taken?

All foreign nationals working on behalf of their Government in Canada (Embassies, Consulates, etc.), were not counted in the Canadian Census. This would include Military personnel here on training.

My advice is to check the National Archives (GB), he would have been counted in the GB 1901 Census but Overseas as Ships, Military Bases, Embassy, etc., would be considered British Soil and I assume they must have been counted.
