Llangollen Advertiser 8th December 1916

Staffordshire Soldier Decorated at Wrexham. On Tuesday.afternoon Major Maunsell of Beechley, Wrexham, visited Roseneath Hospital and decorated L.-Corpl. Hemsley. of the North Staffordshire Regiment, with the Military Medal, which has been awarded to him for conspicuous bravery on the battlefield. L.-Corpl. Hemsley, who comes from Burton- on-Trent, has been wounded three times, and his leg has been amputated.

7th December 1917
At the matinee Major Hugh Peel, of Brynypys, presided, and those present included  Major Mansell, , and a crowd of wounded soldiers.

Does anyone have an idea who Major Maunsell / Mansell was. I can find a Major Mansell in South Wales  earlier but he is a magistrate.

Thanks,

I've asked a contact - Mansell - to see whether he can throw any light on this for you.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

My Mansell contact is currently unable to throw any light on Major Mansell.  :'(

It's difficult with no first name.
He seems to be quite an important man, I'm wondering if this is him.
Again no full name but some clues.

You seem to be assuming that every major named Maunsell, Mansel or Mansell mentioned in Welsh newspapers 1890-1920 is the same person.

There were several majors named Maunsell in the British Army in 1916 but I haven't found any with a connection to Wrexham.

It's possible that he was renting "Beechley" temporarily, or that the house had been requisitioned by the War Department as it was in WW2.

A report in the Western Mail of 28 August 1919 concerns a Major C H R Crawshay of Beechley House, Wrexham, whose wife's jewellery was stolen in Dublin.

He was Codrington Howard Rees of the RWF.  Beechley was not far from the Hightown Barracks and as you say was probably used for officers.

I`m just  trying to pin the right Major Mansell  down.  ???

You mention WW2 , do you have any  details of Beechley from that time, I have a photo of American GI`s in 1943.
It`s the history of the house itself I`m working on, but names are a bonus.

Thanks
