Alice Nurse
« on: Tuesday 18 May 21 15:11 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information on Alice Nurse. Her parents were Thomas Peter Nurse and Eleanor Jermyn. Alice later went by the name Gladys Alice Wallace Nurse. She immigrated to Australia and married William Robert Silcock. I presume she met him when he was a soldier in England in WW1. I would love to know how they met and why she changed her name

Helllo and welcome to Rootschat.

Some dates would have been helpful  ::)

So let's start with her parents marriage.

Marriages Sep 1879

JERMYN    Eleanor        Hackney    1b   699
Nurse    Thomas Peter        Hackney    1b   699

And her birth registration.

First name(s)   Alice
Last name   Nurse
Birth quarter   3
Birth year   1896
Mother's maiden name   Jermyn
District   Stepney
County   London
Country

There seem to be a further 7 births with the surname Nurse and the mother's maiden name of Jermyn, in Hackney and Stepney and strangely all girls!

Welcome from me too

1901 & 1911 census entries from Family Search

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9NC-B27
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWF3-13H

There is no way of finding how they met - no records with that type of information

Only somebody with direct info would know why she changed her christian names

Thank you all for your efforts.  ;D I was hoping Alice may have appeared on a census between 1911 and 1919 and may have stated an occupation etc for her.

There wasn't a census between 1911 and 1919!   They occur every 10 years and we are all eagerly awaiting the release of the 1921 census early next year.

Did you know that she was baptised on 29th Feb 1912 at age 15,at St Luke's Victoria Dock.

I wonder if she was given more christian names at that time?

It's something the catholic's do,they give a saints name at baptism.

Would it be normal for someone to be baptised at 16 years of age?  Also how do I find out that she was Catholic. I was assuming she was Protestant.
