John Matheson/Mathieson/Matthewson (or another variant) born 1799
« on: Wednesday 19 May 21 02:20 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have never looked into my Scottish Ancestry before so I have no idea what resources are available etc.

I go back to John Matheson (or other variants) born 1799 Inverness who married a Catherine Mackintosh born 1802 Inverness.

Children

Owen Matheson born 1827 Inverness
Hugh John Matheson born 1828 Inverness
Duncan Matheson b 1833 Inverness
Catherine Matheson born 1836 Inverness
Jane Matheson born 1837 Inverness
Jessie McDonell (Matheson) b 1837 Glengarry Fort Augustus Inverness
John Alexander Matheson b 1838 Inverness

Before going to Australia on the "Asia" 1839.

John died in Australia 13 April 1851 aged 52.

I have no dates of baptisms, date and place of the Marriage etc.

Kind Regards,

Wayne Cook
NSW Australia
his ggg grandson

I have had a bit of a try after creating an account and no luck with Alexander Matthewson and Catherine McGruger so far :(

Hi Wayne
Just having a look for your Matheson family & I came across this 1841 census entry
https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a14c8fdf4040b9d6ecbfea1/catharine-mcgruer-1841-inverness-shire-urquhart-glenmoristn-1771-?locale=en
I think possibly Hugh Matheson is a younger brother to your John, and he is with his family and his mother Catharine McGruer here in 1841.

This is possibly the death certificate for Hugh Matheson (available on SP)
MATHESON   HUGH   age 78
1879   092/1 1   Boleskine
mother: MCGRUER
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)

Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Thanks, that looks like the family and it looks like dad died (but I notice that Hugh's wife isn't in the census either so maybe his mum is visiting and looking after the grandchildren)

That death could be him but the age is out by about 5 years because the 1841 census says he is 35 so born 1806, the death one was born 1801
