Burial register abbreviations
« on: Wednesday 19 May 21 14:07 BST (UK) »
A number of 18C English burials registers have the abbreviation CH against some entries and also the letter P in the day of the month column. See attached example.

I'm assuming CH means Child - is that correct and is there any convention for how old someone had to be to be classed as a child?

I don't know what the P means. Can anyone help me?

Thanks
Nigel

Greetings, and a warm welcome to Rootschat.

P might stand for pauper.  A poor person whose family could not afford to pay for a burial (if there were surviving family members) would be buried by the Parish.

Hope this helps.

Philip

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

The P may also denote a private baptism.  These baptisms were done when a baby was sickly and might not survive to be baptised at a later age.
