George PONTING, born 1846, Bristol
« on: Wednesday 19 May 21 16:39 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Records show that there are two surname variations, viz., POYNTING and PONTIN.

I am trying to establish whether the following trials concern the same George PONTING:

(a):   17/03/1863 Gloucester Easter Sessions, 5 months hard labour for larceny:
(b):   07/07/1863 Bristol Midsummer Sessions,12 months hard labour (2 sentences concurrent) for
         larceny: and
(c):   22/03/1865 Bristol Easter Sessions, 6 months hard labour for larceny.

The convict records for these three convictions are not clear to identity and as far as I have been able to research there are no newspaper reports that might help.  (a) and (b) are confusing in that the 5 months for (a) would have meant his discharge on 16/08/1863 being more than a month beyond the sentencing for (b), although the latter charge did specify he had been previously convicted.   I am uncertain whether or not "good behaviour" played any part in reducing short sentences in early Victorian times?   Of course, it is accepted convicts were released on licence for longer sentences.   I could have misread the 3 for 5 in (a) ::) ::)

I wonder if anyone has access to records that may explain the identity dilemma.

Thank you for your help.

George PONTING

c1839 - Cheltenham, Labourer

----

Ancestry has George VENTIN (Bracket) PONTING - living in Cheltenham 1861

George - aged 22 - born Fairford, Glos
Ann - 24 - born Glos. Glos
Henry - 2
Thomas GARDENER - brother - unmarried - tailor aged 20

---

Gloucestershirebmd

birth:
PONTING - Henry - mother's maiden name: GARDNER - 1859 Cheltenham

assume this could be George PONTING convicted  in 1854  aged 24.

There is a Public Members Tree on Ancestry - and in 1867 - George and his wife (now called EDWARDS)  - appear to have a son born 1867 - Knightsbridge, Middlesex.

Thank you Capetown,

I am concerned with the afterthought that the "5 months hard labour" was possibly a clerical error and should have read "3".   Sadly, there are no other records that could offer some form of contradiction.

For the moment I am going to concede that all three convictions, (a), (b) and (c), relate to the same person.

Good Evening,

I have now resolved the question of his convictions and confirm that only (b) was applicable.

New Thread

Can anyone indicate when he died.   I have searched all the Indexes to no avail.   The date would be later than 1911.

Thank you,

BAC

Was George living here in 1911 with his second wife and three children from his first marriage?  Not sure if I have the right George.

56 College St, Bristol, Gloucestershire - his occupation is given as Dock Labourer.

Is this his birth record?

Still trying to find a death for him.

There is this death which may be his:-

Deaths Sep 1918
Ponting    George    72    Long Ashton    5c   621

Gives a birth year of 1846.  The only one that comes up between 1911 and 1939 for Somerset.

There doesn't appear to be a likely death for Gloucestershire.  Depends on whether his surname was recorded correctly.

Girl Guide,

Thank you for the research.

I had noted the Long Ashton death in 1918 and for the moment, unless further details become available, I have assumed that entry refers to the actual George PONTING,   Long Ashton is quite near Bristol.
