David R Evans emigration and death certificate
« on: Wednesday 19 May 21 20:08 BST (UK) »
Hello

Hoping those with access to appropriate records might be able to help. Looking for the emigration of David Evans/ David R. Evans (1812-1891) and family between 1871-1880 (maybe 1876) and his possible death certificate which may confirm his parents.

In 1871 he is listed in the UK census as a retired farmer (Brynyrhyd)
David Evans 58
Sarah Evans (wife) 53
John Evans 28 (Candidate for the Church of England)
Mary Evans 23
Margaret Evans 20
David Evans 14
William Evans 12

All born Llanedy except for Saran born Llannon

Attached is probably them in 1880 US census at Padonia Township in the County of Brown, Kansas

His probable death is on 08 Mar 1891 Hiawatha, Kansas, hoping a copy of the associated death certificate/entry might confirm his parentage

Thank you in advance

The emigration must have been 1870 - 1875 as I think this is them in the 1875 Kansas census

A further clue to the emigration is what I think is the burial record of their daughter Sarah, which says they emigrated in 1872 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/91935049/sarah-bowen

You will need to search incoming passenger lists as available outgoing passenger lists from the UK are from the 1890's

When you say (post #1) "confirm his parentage", is your David R Evans the David Evans at Plâs Newydd Mill on the 1851 Census - ref HO107 2469  360 1 ?
If so, have you viewed his marriage cert, available on FindMyPast -

Llanedy Parish Church, May 27 1839
David Evans, full age, widower, farmer, Gelly Meydrim (?), father John Evans, farmer
Sarah Jones, full age, spinster, Plâs Newydd Mill, father John Jones, farmer

This is possibly them in '41 - HO107  1379  6  5? David's age transcribed "70" and clearly"25" on image!

There is an 1845 Llanelly Registration of a Morgan Evans, 1845 - mother's maiden name Jones. There is a Morgan age 6, on the '51 Census.

Thanks very much for all this very useful information.

The emigration record looks very promising, perhaps he went in advance of the rest of the family. Is there are mention of a Sarah Bowen (born 1840) and William Bowen (1835) as part of this group, as this would be their Daughter Sarah Evans who married William Bowen (1865, I think)

Yes I think it is him in 1851 at Plasnewydd Mill, and if your 1841 reference is to him, his wife and 11 month old daughter Sarah at Gors, yes I think it is him as well.

He was a widow when he married Sarah Jones and the consensus is that his first wife was a Rachel Pryce who he married 10 Feb 1835 but sadly died later that year. I have to investigate her further but various trees suggest she inherited a large sum of money from her father/uncle, there is confusing/conflicting information from available trees on this. Certainly lots of uncles, aunts and properties are mentioned in her will. In her will she leaves Plasnewydd (which she says is also known as Pantyfynnon) to David, so quite why he is a Gors in 1841 and does not appear at Plasnewydd until 1851 is unclear. Though the will mentions that mortgage and interests still have to be paid and also a marriage settlement which may have had additional stipulations.

The consensus is that his mother was Sarah Robert (1776-1867). David seems to adopt the middle initial R. after his move to America, the R, I think, being a reference to his mother’s maiden name.

The 1875 Kansas census ties up nicely with the family in 1871 in Wales. However, I have been caught out before. US death records frequently record the names of the parents and I was hoping if it was available it would close the loop and confirm his mother and father’s names.
