How old do you think he is in that picture

That's my problem. I'm terrible with guessing at ages. Anyone else have an idea?

Any idea if there is a connection to Cheshire?

Allan-were you thinking of the James GLEAVE from Frodsham b~1896?

Maureen

Maureen - when I was searching for a Lance Corporal J Gleave, the only possibility I came up with Sergeant James Gleave (of Frodsham) -- all other J Gleave were privates -- I was thinking on the lines that to reach the rank of sergeant he probably would have been a lance corporal / corporal before hand. I don't think that the OP will ever solve his quest.

Thank you for replying,Allan. :)

This  chap caught my eye:
UK, British Army World War I Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920
James Gleave
Regiment or Corps:   Cheshire Regiment, Shropshire Light Infantry
Regimental Number:   12426, 12426

I can't read these things but it does mention being a SGT /Lance Cpl and 2nd ?Lieut. Cheshire Reg and then Shropshire.
Which ties in with:

Short article:
Halifax Evening Courier January 2, 1934

James Gleave of Main street Frodsham who joined the 9th Cheshires in 1914,gaining a commission on the field and the Military Cross has only just received his 1914-1915 Star. Fourteen days ago he received his Victory and Allied medals.

Hi Maureen,

The only other one that I found (I mislaid my notes) was a John Henry Gleave, 14732 10th Battalion Cheshire Regiment (Lance Corporal then a Sergeant), he died 6 March 1917. As I mentioned, I doubt if the OP will ever find an answer.

A connection!

Sergeant James Gleave of Frodsham was a member of the Primitive Methodist Church in that town. See "Welcome Home" item in column 1:https://search.findmypast.co.uk/bna/ViewArticle?id=BL%2F0000342%2F19170113%2F167%2F0006&browse=true

So was a Sister May who was there 1912-1916 as Primitive Methodist home missioner. See "Sister May Leaving": https://search.findmypast.co.uk/bna/viewarticle?id=bl%2f0000342%2f19160916%2f147&stringtohighlight=sister%20may%20frodsham

Well done ShaunJ !!!

I did see the 'welcome home' report for James Gleave but I must admit I didn't think that the Methodist Church would use the term 'Sister'

I believe that you have 'cracked it'

There's a 1919 photo of the Frodsham Celebration Committee (end of WW1) with a James Gleave (postman/joiner) 3rd from left, middle row
