And no Elizabeth Hindshaw death in 1891 - wonder how the tree owner came up with that date ::)

An interesting snippet in the Newcastle Daily Chronicle 5th October 1869.

Notice. -  John M Hindshaw, 73 Chandless Street, Gateshead, will not be answerable for any debt or debts that his wife, Elizabeth Hindshaw, may contract after the date of this notice.  5 October 18??

(last two numbers illegible but presumably 1869).

Probably only because husband John showed as a widower on the 1891 census  ::)

So sorry for the lack of reply... it took me a while to know what to click on. I am not the most tech savey. Thank you all for the responses! Wow! It was amazing finding Elizabeth in the 1871 census in the Mitchell Household and also learning about the newspaper clipping that mentions a possible debt she went to fulfill. I wonder why she doesn't show up in any census in 1881 since on her husband's census it says he is still married but she is not living with them (he is not marked widowed until 1891 like JenB mentioned). So now the mystery lies in finding if she dies as a domestic servant between 1882 and 1891...?

Some inaccuracies re birthplace but this is from a tree on Ancestry

Quote
When Elizabeth Anderson was born in July 1840 in Wylam, Northumberland, her father, Luke, was 51, and her mother, Jane, was 43.

She married John Murray Hindshaw on 7 January 1861 in Tynemouth, Northumberland.
They had four children during their marriage.

She died in 1891 at the age of 51.

Wylam would have been in Hexham RD.

The maiden surname for this Elizabeth Anderson was Gray.

... and also learning about the newspaper clipping that mentions a possible debt she went to fulfill.

It is not necessarily that she had incurred a debt but simply a husband putting up a public notice that he will not be responsible for any debt she may incur now or in the future.

Divorce was pretty rare in those days so this action by the husband John was not uncommon.

Elizabeth Anderson may have met someone after 1871 and passed herself off as married to this other person. I mention this because her death, as and when it happened, may have been registered under another surname. Hard to say isn't it  :-\
