Church / Dempsey
« on: Saturday 22 May 21 07:23 BST (UK) »
Forgive me, I am aware that there have been numerous chats re Church family. I am interested in a Stephen Church who married a Mary Dempsey 8 Feb 1872 at Killowen, Coleraine. His father is Stephen Church a farmer who I think married a Mary McLease/McLean. Mary Dempsey is from Drumale (I can't trace this) and her father is Patrick Dempsey.

Stephen and Mary Dempsey lived in Killygullib and had Mary Jane in 1873. I know they moved to Scotland, where he died 1875.

Any info guidance on either families would be appreciated

Here is the civil marriage

Was he working in Barrow in Furness or was he from there?

That is a mystery that I still haven't managed to uncover. We think the family are originally from Ireland. I'd assumed he was working there, and English records have uncovered nothing.

Thank you Heywood. I'm guessing the names in brackets are father's names? (John, Ned, Monty).

Yes, I would think so - used to distinguish them from each other.

There is a death for Stephen Church in 1874

Have you looked at that. He was killed and there are newspaper snippets about the incident.

There is a published tree though with links to Texas so perhaps not your man’s father.

The Dempseys were from Drumeil/Drumale area but the problem is that there were so many of them and quite a few Patricks amongst them. I’ve been collecting Dempseys for over 30 years and still haven’t sorted them all out. I have lots more on these & other Dempsey families in Aghadowey/Agivey-

These are 2 of the Dempsey holdings at Drumeil showing changes in the tenants (Worshipful Company of Ironmongers):
1859 Patrick “Morty” Dempsey. 1863 Patrick “Murt” Dempsey (5.2.38) wife, 7 ch. 1886 Henry Dempsey (5.2.38).
1859 Patrick ”John” Dempsey. 1863 Patrick “Jack” Dempsey (8.1.1) wife, 3 ch., 1 child. 1886 William Dempsey.

Hugh Dempsey (c1843-Dec.1913) of Drumeil, son of Patrick, married 20 Feb.1873 to Ellen McDonald & had family.

His brother?- Henry Dempsey (c1836-aft.1901), Drumeil, son of Patrick, m. Mary (c1838-aft.1901).
Annie Dempsey (c1856-aft.1901), daughter of Patrick,  m.(11 Feb.1880 Aghadowey) James Dempsey (c1859-aft.1901), son of James Dempsey.

Jane Dempsey, daughter of Patrick, m.(1 Apr.1866 Aghadowey) Bernard Kane, labourer, Drumeil.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1866/11532/8241321.pdf
Patrick Dempsey, farmer, son of Patrick, m.(25 Dec.1867 Aghadowey) Elizabeth Dunlop.

The records for Aghadowey came under Killowen (St. John's) so things can be a bit jumbled. The earlier chapel (also known as Bovagh) was in the townland of Mullahinch (now in ruins) and here's the present one-

If you click on 'report to moderator' someone will move this thread to the Derry/Londonderry board where it belongs.
