HELP PLEASE - Royal Field Artillery WW1
« on: Saturday 22 May 21 18:57 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone!
I hope someone can help me as I am trying to discover some information about my Great Grandfathers time spent as a Driver in A Battery, 15 Brigade, 5 Division, British Expedition Force, Royal Field Artillery.
His name is John Herbert Skelton born 23 June 1987 (some of his records have Walter Joseph Skelton - this was a transcription error as that is his Dad's Name)
His regimental number was 951400
I have found in his records on Ancestry that he wrote a letter asking for a medal that he didn't receive during WW1 in France - he didn't find out until the division moved to Italy and he was told on the 28th January 1918 - this is when it was printed in the Gazette also. BUT he received the award for action in France. I can't seem to find any information on the battle or what he earned the award doing. So if anyone can help me to decipher this information, I would be sooo grateful.
I would love to get a clearer picture of what happened and also if there is anyway of finding out if he received his award as he should have done after the war as nobody knows as he died of TB in 1965 and my grandfather was only 2 years old at the time.

Is this related to your Skeltons posted on greatwarforum

https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/289555-grandfather-joseph-skelton/

Snippet from above
“ A15 Battery is correct, Joseph Herbert Skelton 951400.
He enlisted in Nov 1915 until Dec ................I've also found a medal certificate for his father Walter”

Hi there,
Yes it is, this was something my aunt posted but I have been through it all and I'm just trolling through the national archives war diaries as we speak.

Thank you!

Gazette entries appear several weeks after the event.
Looking at his record he was wounded in action 3/10/17
& goes on to say (remained at duty) so I think this is where you should look.
Added:
If you haven't found it yet it was the 26th. Oct. 1917.
Passchendaele offensive.
A/15 Bty. were in X Group positioned behind Chateau Wood on the
Menin Rd.
They were laying down a creeping barrage in square 16 (far right) in support of an
Infantry attack.

Thank you so much Jim1!!
@jim1
I am trying to get a clearer picture of why he received the military medal for this operation?
Anything you can do to help me? Point me in the right direction?

It's unlikely you will find any mention of why.
The MM was awarded for bravery & outstanding contribution
during the operation.

Fortunately his service record survived. The info came from that.
So he continued to deliver shells to the guns while wounded.
Just after this operation he was posted to Italy with his Bde.
It took a while for his MM ribbon to catch up with him & wasn't
presented with it until 3/18.
It's quite possible he received it for the above.
