Charlotte Probin - What happened to you?
« on: Sunday 23 May 21 12:27 BST (UK) »
Charlotte Probin/Probyn was my husband’s great aunt.
She was born on 14/7/1878 at Madeley, Staffordshire.
Her parents were James Probin and Mary Bellis.  By the time she was 7, her mother had died and her father remarried Ann Smith.  2 years later her father died and Charlotte appears on the 1891 census (RG/2151/94/41) living with her stepmother and siblings.
1895 she has an illegitimate son, James William Probin.
1901 census (RG13/3726/91/6).  She appears (as Charlotte Robyn on Ancestry) in Broughton, Lancashire working as a servant.
1902 She has another illegitimate son George Edward Probyn, registered in Chorlton.
After this she seems to disappear – Can anyone find her?

Regarding her sons:
James William Probin/Probyn
1901 – James is a boarder with the John H Poole and his wife Elizabeth
1911 – He is still with the family, although Elizabeth Poole is now a widow

George Edward Probin/Probyn is brought up by Charlotte’s sister Ada and her husband, Edward Watkin.  They emigrate to Canada in 1906 and are on the passenger list with Charlotte’s son named Eddie aged 3.

I would be really grateful if anyone could find Charlotte after 1902

Many thanks
Chris

Thank you so much Rosie99
I can't believe I missed that!  I can't find a marriage or a death for her though.

Thanks again

A Charlotte Probyn married Griffith jones in 1912 Wolverhampton.

1920 census for    Filmore Avenue, Scranton , Ward 5,Lackawanna , Pennsylvania USA.

Charlotte Jones age 38, english,
Stanley age 6 b Pennsylvania
Ivor age 5 b Pennsylvania

there is a death certificate of  Charlotte Jones

Death At moses taylor hospital.
21st january 1920, scranton Pennsylvania

Age 37

Birth 14th July

On the census she says born circa  1883 but there were no Charlotte Probin/Probyn

Thank you very much for that information. I am sure this must be my Charlotte Probin/Probyn. I think she has taken 5 years off her age, possibly because Griffith Jones is younger than her. Although her birth year isn't correct, the date of 14 July is correct.  Her father is named as James Probyn and that is correct too.  Her mother was Mary Bellis but she died when Charlotte was only 7.  Her stepmother sometimes used the name Evans so I'm sure this is the correct Charlotte.  Thank you again

Thank you Ladyhawk for that extra information.  Very interesting.  I could see on Ancestry that there were some documents from the USA.  Unfortunately I have got a worldwide subscription so I'm very grateful.  Good to see Griffith Jones date and place of birth - always useful with a Jones surname :)

Thanks again

Thank you once again Ladyhawk for the excellent information.  I am realising now that I haven't used the Familysearch site to its full potential.  It looks as though sister Ann decided to join the family in Pennsylvania. I will have a good look at Familysearch today to see if there is more information about the family
Many thanks
