I am no navy expert but I believe a bounty was also known as prize money, it was paid when an enemy ship was sunk or captured. Presumably he died in service and his share of the money was paid to his widow.

"The royal bounty was a lump sum of one year’s wages which was paid to widows, dependent children or mothers (aged over 50) of officers killed in action. When relatives applied for a payment they often submitted marriage and death certificates as well as documents to prove their age, relationship or poor financial situation."

Added:
9. Royal bounty and compassionate fund
9.1 Royal bounty 1675-1822

The years do not agree with the original post, but maybe it was a term carried over to later years.

An example: Mrs Mitchell at Portsea in 1878 who received £25 a year:

Thank you, the wife was only 32 so I guess the money was for the children.  Officer? I'll have to do some more looking.

Thanks again

The words in brackets "(aged over 50)" are immediately after the word "mothers". I think the age applies only to the mother of the deceased. A son would have been expected to support his mother in her old age if she was in need.

Hi,

It looks like ShaunJ has found the right man :)

If you look at the previews of these images you can see that Frederick ALLEN born 1854 Battle, Sussex served until 14 September 1867 on the first link and then although the second link doesn't mention his place or DOB the service starts on the 15 September 1867 so I think it is the same man.

He was lost on the Eurydice.
