Robert's place of birth is given as Northallerton in the 1871 and 1881 censuses ( in later censuses it is showing as Blaydon, Leeds and Chester le Street!).

I suspect his parents were called Roger Chapman and Sarah Ann Brigham. There is a baptism in Northallerton 21 June 1851 for a Robert Chapman - parents Roger and Sarah Ann, Roger a saddler. Unfortunately there does not seem to be a corresponding entry in the Groindex. ( The Robert Chapman showing in the Groindex as being born in Northallerton in 1851 had George Chapman and Elizabeth Winn as parents).

This is Robert in the 1871 and 1881 censuses.

And this is likely to be him in 1861

And this is Roger Chapman in 1851 in Northallerton

Clearly the only way to ensure that Roger was Robert's father is via Robert's marriage cert but it is worth noting that looking at Robert's nephew showing with him in the 1881 census his birth was registered as William Roger Chapman. I think his father was Robert's brother, Thomas who is recorded in Bradford in 1881 as a widower and like Thomas an iron moulder.

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)
