Russian Place Name

Help!!  I'm researching a Jewish family tree - the 1911 census records the family coming from Sokolov, Russia - but there are several places called Sokolov.

This is the actual entry - but I can't decipher the last word, which might help me!! 

Any help would be appreciated!  Many thanks, Selby

It looks like Shedletka, but nothing is coming up on a search.  What was the family name - have you found them in any other records?

Hi Rockford, the name is Benjamin Schneider (wife Golda) - this is a bigger version, but I don't think it helps?

Shedlits (various spellings) is Yiddish for Siedlce, which is both a town and a region (gub., for guberniya, is written above the line in your first extract). So the town of origin is probably Sokolow Podlaski, which is in Siedlce province, now in Poland, and had a sizeable Jewish population.

ADDED - on JRI-Poland (link above) there’s a possible marriage in Sokolow Podlaski for Boim Matys Sznajder and Golda Monka in 1883, both aged 28. It’s a reasonable fit with the 1911 census, which states married 27 years. (‘Boim’ is perhaps a mistranscription of an abbreviated ‘Benjamin’, in Polish?). Not necessarily the right record but just a suggestion.

I think you’ve found him Bookbox! 😃. I was asked to look at this family and was given the following information: Morris Schneider, father Benjamin Matthew Schneider from Sokolov.... that was all.

Not sure how you did that? Was there anything else about the family? Any little snippet would be amazing! If not, thank you anyway 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻.

JRI-Poland is an indexing site only, so there are no further details. You need to look at the original records.

Did you look at the link I gave? It shows you that some records for this town have been filmed by LDS, but I think they are not accessible online. The original records are at the Polish State Archives, but the images for this period don’t appear to be online yet either (it's an ongoing project).

You may have to get some archival research done, or wait a while until more goes online.

This could be the index entry for Morris Schneider's birth in Sokolow Podlaski (aged 20 in 1911). But Sznajder is a common enough name there, as you’ll see if you search the site ...

It looks like Benjamin Schneider was buried at Edmonton Federation cemetery. The stone (if there is one) should give the name of his father.
