Sarah Ann Caldicott - Was she a bigamist?

This might be a silly question (I might have missed something obvious) but: how do you know that Sarah Ann Caldicott who married Thomas Gough is the same person as the Sarah Ann who turns up in the USA with George Roberts?

A few trees have a copy of her death certificate with parents as
Underhill Caldicott and Sarah Caldicott

Sarah Ann flleing to America has been passed down through the family but there is nothing in writing to back this up. Would Sarah Ann have been able to marry George Roberts in the USA without any paperwork to support who she was; would there have been a marriage certificate or can it be assumed that she just used the Roberts surname without any questions being asked by the authorities in the USA?

I think she would of needed birth certificate or some other document to prove who she was ..And she could have used any name she wanted

A few trees have her arriving New York 5 August 1880, this Sarah Roberts says she is American.

The 1880 census was taken 1 June 1880 and completed in 30 days but reflect facts as of June 1st.
So this cannot be the correct Sarah Rogers

(Amondg) that Sarah Roberts arriving in 1880 can't be the Sarah Roberts that I am referring to as she was already in America having given birth in Nov 1879 to her first child with George Roberts

Most trees have that immigration record without checking if it's the correct one 
As she is on the 1880 census and first child born 1879 .Most probably arrived that year but not seeing a record so far

Have to agree with rosie17's first sentence.
As rosie17 states Sarah is on the 1880 Census meaning she arrived in America between late 1877 and sometime in 1879. Did ALL ships have to produce a passenger list or could she have travelled under a different name and perhaps she produced false paperwork. Perhaps we will never know!!
