Hi all,

My 3xGt Grandmother Sarah Palmer had an illegitimate son, George, born in Frome in 1837.

I believe George was staying with his uncle and aunt Charles and Elizabeth Palmer in 1851 in Shoreditch, Middlesex.

By 1861, he was an AB in the Royal Navy, on the vessel Racoon off Mount Carmel Coast of Syria.  He is listed as 'married'.

In 1871, George was on the Princess Charlotte (I) in Hong Kong Harbour.  By now he was a Gunner 2nd Class.  He is still listed as married.

I'm at a loss for 1881, but in 1891 he is at 42 Johnston Terrace, Stoke Damerel, Devon.  He is listed as a Retired Gunner RN.  He is living with his wife, Mary, who was born about 1839 in Lostwithiel, Cornwall.  This is the ony sighting of her that I have, so far.

Is anyone able to find Mary on any other census records?  Any sight of a marriage out there anywhere?  It would be great to find out more!

Many thanks,
Emma

Thank you both for the info - really appreciated.

I am curious as to whether George had any children or not, considering he appears to have had quite a long career in the Navy.

His record is on National  Archives

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7886664

Although it doesn’t tell you much more than you already know.  And doesn’t go past 1869 except for mention of his pension in 1885
