Haddow Marriages Biggleswade
« on: Tuesday 25 May 21 11:07 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm looking for two marriages
Archibald George Haddow + Sarah Jane Coles Jul 1860 Biggleswade
William Coles Haddow + Ellen/Elizabeth Smith Jun 1891 Biggleswade
I was hoping to visit either Biggleswade Library or Bedford Archives next week but due to the current COVID situation am unsure whether I'd be able to - clarification on this as well if poss!
Regards
Deb

Biggleswade RD covers lots of parishes, George & his father William were living in Silsoe prior to Georges wedding. The 1891 has George living in Shefford.

My apologies I have the GRO Refs + I'm looking for the marriage records + didn't realise Biggleswade covers lots of parishes.
1861 Census shows Archibald George Haddow in Clophill
1891 Census shows William Coles Haddow in Shefford
Archibald George Haddow is William Coles' Father

As per the BFHS Beds Surnames Index the marriage of Archibald Haddow & Sarah Jane Coles in 1860 is listed as Biggleswade District so not a specific parish & possibly done in the register office, and as such wont be available as a parish marriage certificate. The other couple's marriage in 1891 won't be on this Surnames Index.

If you're thinking of going to Beds Archives you will need to arrange an appointment (details on their website) at least a week in advance & tell them what records/info you are after.

It may be simpler just to buy the marriage certs from the GRO

Cheers John

Thank you all for your replies + help.
We're planning a visit to Biggleswade next week as we want to explore a lot of the surrounding area,  especially Wrest Park which is where Archibald was Land Agent for nearly 60 years + most of his children were born in particular Mary Jane Haddow our Great Grandmother, so will contact Beds Archives.
Thanks again
Deb

Have you contacted English Heritage regarding your ancestor who worked at Wrest Park? Probably the local contact rather than the main EH contact. There may have been research on some of the staff. There certainly was by the volunteers at a nearby EH property where OH  is a volunteer. I have only seen a presentation on the architect who designed the Archer pavilion, but that may not be the only research carried out by their volunteers.

Beds Archives online catalogue brings up this gem.... you may have already seen it

Ref : HF81/2/6

Correspondence from A. George Haddow to W.F.A. Fletcher relating to queries and business for the courts of 1914. On a letter dated 14 July 1914, Mr Haddow adds a PS. that 'owing to old age and infirmity I retired from the Wrest Estate Office, March last year after an innings of 57 years and 2 months and have been working up, at home, the rental and correspondence for the coming courts.'
