I keep getting stumped - information on late great grandfather
« on: Tuesday 25 May 21 11:26 BST (UK) »
**Edit**

Hello All

I'm wondering if you can perhaps assist me. Iv signed up with a number of sites and Iv searched through the Irish Genealogy site, but seem to be coming up with absolutely nothing.
I'm thinking that perhaps my approach is wrong. Or I simply just do not have enough information to work with.

Any suggestions?

All I have is my late great grandfather's name, his occupation and where he may have possibly lived when my grandmother married my grandfather in 1929.
It also seems that my great grandparents weren't married as the death certificate for my great grandmother noted she was a spinster at death.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

*Edit: as suggested the information I have is as follows:

My great grandfather, John Horgan, a labourer was noted as my grandmother’s father on her wedding certificate. My grandmother, Mary Horgan married a Scotsman (my grandfather) Matthew James Cairney on the 27th of July 1929. I am assuming that my great grandfather lived at the same address as my grandmother- College View, Midleton.
I have found a record of death for Mary Ahern, who died in Midleton, Co Cork. Mary Cairney( my grandmother) was noted as her daughter. It was also noted that Mary Ahern was a spinster.

John Horgan seems to be a popular name, which doesn’t give much direction.

I would advise that to get the best possible assistance and suggestions from forum members, you include the details of the people in question, provided all are deceased.

Can I suggest that you transcribe the 1929 marriage certificate in full for us, with ages, residence, occupations and witnesses.

Debra  :)

I have found a record of death for Mary Ahern, who died in Midleton, Co Cork. Mary Cairney( my grandmother) was noted as her daughter. It was also noted that Mary Ahern was a spinster.

What made you look at that death?  Is AHERN a name that you already knew?

Thank you for the responses so far.

I was fortunate enough to chat to an elderly gentleman who had known my late father and his parents.  He had given me the name Ahern as, he had also known my grandmother’s brother, who was known as Mat Ahern.
I cannot find any birth record for him, nor my grandmother.
I have parked the search around my grandmother and her mother and brother and started on John Horgan.

The just ask link, was my query around my grandmother and her side of the family.

I have attached the marriage registration that I have found
