Paul,
you said........
It also seems that my great grandparents weren't married as the death certificate for my great grandmother noted she was a spinster at death.
What is her name?

Hi Maggsie

My great grandmother was Mary Ahern.  She died on the 25th of November 1940.  Her address was listed as College View, Midleton.

Thought it sounded familiar  :)

There is a thread here https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=845439.0

I have only skimmed over it (I contributed to it) but there might be something here to help or build on?

Meant to add, there is some misinformation in the middle of the thread, Paul had the wrong family.
The later posts deal with the current query.

The civil marriage record shows Mary Horgan and Matthew Cairney married in the Roman Catholic Church in Midleton.

The church would have been far stricter about what they wrote on a record at that time than the state and possibly included the mother's maiden name. Have you contacted them for the church record?

Good Morning,

Thank you for your reply.

I have contacted the local parish and had given me the same information as the information available on genealogy IE.
I will call them again and ask if they have other records which might have more details.
Thank you for this.

No problem - the church would have required at least a letter of freedom for Matthew as his address was outside the parish (to prove he wasn't previously married).  If Mary was from outside the parish originally the same would have been required for her. By the late 1920s most churches used a pre-printed book for recording marriages that included a space for both parents.
