« on: Tuesday 25 May 21 11:44 BST (UK) »
I’m trying to trace information on which school/s my grandfather attended in the 1870’s 1880’s in Wigtownshire
Not sure if there is an online source
MARSHALL family in Ayrshire, Wigtownshire, Kirkcudbrightshire, Yorkshire, Canada
McHARG in Wigtownshire, Glasgow.
MYLES in Lanarkshire, Ireland, Canada.
HUGHES in Lanarkshire, Ireland, Canada, USA
SHIELDS in Lanarkshire, Ireland, Canada, USA

Don't know of any online resources for this. The Education act of 1872 meant that all children under 14 had to attend a school. Most likely it would be the parish school of the parish he lived in.  The Ewart Library in Dumfries and the Library in Stranraer will be he first places to look, but not all of these records survive.

Hi,  Ewart Library catalogue is online
 http://archives.dumgal.gov.uk/DServe/dserve.exe?dsqApp=Archive&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqCmd=Search.tcl

Just had a quick look and only saw Kirkcolm records, but you can search under the parish.
