YOu may already have this:
An on-line tree has a photo of a grave in Scotland with a MI inscription for Alexander BUCHAN, died 1900 at St George in Queensland, so it seems that this would be a newspaper mention of his death from typhoid. He has the title 'Constable' so presumably he was a policeman.
