Travelling artist 1840s/1850s NSW
« on: Wednesday 26 May 21 08:04 BST (UK) »
Hi all. I have a photo of a framed oil portrait of an ancestor who lived in NSW. I think it has been painted in the 1840s/1850s (sitter died in 1855). Family lore is it was painted by a travelling artist. It's in a frame with what appears to be Cedric Wirth F A A written across corner.
That is not the sitter's name, nor a family or local name.
I presume it is either the name of the artist, or the framer perhaps. Any leads would be great. Also any idea what F A A might mean?
I have already done a search on Google and Trove but can't find anything relevant.
I could not attach photo for some reason - file too large.
Thanks, Katharine.

Hi
You really need to post an image of the writing, even if you cannot post the whole painting.

Use the snipping tool in your computer to cut out the section with the writing, save as one of the permitted file types and attach.

What part of NSW was it supposed to have been painted?

In Qld on the Electoral roll of 1919

Ryan Rd. NUNDAH
WIRTH, Cedric Owen Glendwy, frame maker

No others of the surname at that address, but others in the region.

In 1925
WIRTH Louis William Karl is also in Ryan Rd.  An artist.

Hi. Thanks for information, it's a likely option. I did try to post but the file in 1.4MB having used snip and I am not sure how to reduce it. And it was in the correct format as well.
Portrait must have been framed at a later date then.

Hi Katherine,
My Grandfather's sister Jane, who was known as Janet, married Louis Wilhelm Karl Wirth (1858-1950), he was one of the founder members of the Queensland School of Art.
I would be interested in seeing the picture you mention.
Kind Regards
Paul Williams

Hi,
I came across this:
This is a pair of portraits of a man and woman dressed in white. They are likely husband and wife, based on their similar outfits and the fact that they are facing inward towards each other. The depiction of the pair in white suggests that these portraits would have likely been used for ancestral veneration, with white being a mourning colour. These portraits are signed “Cedric Wirth F.A.A” suggesting that they were the work of a small group of itinerant European artists that would visit Southeast Asia to paint members of wealthy Dutch colonial and Chinese households. For Chinese Peranakans, ancestral portraits do not just seek to commemorate a death but serves the function of extending the presence of the deceased beyond death.
