William Theodore Smith/Marshall.
« on: Thursday 27 May 21 13:33 BST (UK) »
BIRTH

17 September 1879 at Pendyffryn Llanfair Ruthin Denbighshire

William Theodore (boy) born.

Father - William Marshall - Commercial Traveller.

Mother - Martha Maud Marshall - formerly Anngle.

The informant was Joseph Smith of Pendyffryn Llanfair.
--------------------------------------------------
The story is that Martha Marshall concealed her pregnancy  and moved to North Wales (from Manchester ???) to have her baby.   The baby was left/adopted with Joseph Smith and his family and the child William Theodore took the surname Smith and was brought up by the Smith family.  Don't think he ever saw his mother again but it is said he received a birthday present from her each year.
--------------------------------------------------
William Theodore Smith/Marshall was my grandparents brother and I have all his details.
--------------------------------------------------
But who was Martha Maud Marshall (nee Anngle?)     Anngle may have been a mis-spelling or even a wrong name as Martha wanted to keep her pregnancy a secret.

As far as I know the Smith/Marshall families were not related.

Thanks.

Would it be possible to post the part of his birth cert showing her name?

not sure how to do that -  on the certificate it is definitely ANNGLE.

got the certificate from the local Register Office - hope Registrar got it right from his copy.  I don't think Joseph Smith who was the Informant knew Martha Maud Marshall so what she told him about her maiden name may have got 'lost in translation.'   Because she was keeping the pregnancy a secret she may well have made a name up !

What qualification is given for Joseph Smith to be the informant ?

( below his name in the informant column)

Unusual surname.  Freebmd only shows 8 instances - 4 marriages - 3 births & 1 death

The surname seems to be more prevalent in the NE - particularly Durham

Thanks. -   Informant    --    Joseph Smith Occupier Pendyffryn Llanfair.    (Pendyffryn was the birthplace.)      Almost certain there was no link between Joseph Smith and Martha Marshall she went to N Wales to have her baby.

Hi

Are you sure that William Theodore does not have DNA connection with your grandfather?

You ask about his mum, but what about his dad , the commercial traveller?
