How to order a mis-transcribed GRO pdf?
« on: Thursday 27 May 21 17:25 BST (UK) »
I want to order a death registration from 1839. I can see the record in the index on FREEBMD but it is not coming up on GRO search. I suspect that the handwritten register entry may have been misread by the indexer at GRO. Is there a workaround? (William Hicken or maybe Hickin, Solihull, September 1839, vol XVI, page 299).

There is an option at the bottom of the search page to report an error.  One of the options is a missing death.

As You have experienced, William Hickin/Hicken doesn't appear to be listed on the GRO, for an 1839 September QTR, Solihull, Death. There appear to be no miss transcriptions of His name, or place of death. You could notify the GRO of this missing Record, and hold out to see, if You receive a positive result.

You might have to consider ordering the Death Certificate, from the relevant Warwickshire Registry Office.

you can order using the FreeBMD info, District, Vol & page no, after all that was all they had until 5 years ago also. See their FAQ https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/faq.asp Just Select the Place and Order option & enter the info selecting I know the GRO Ref  https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/app_select.asp you can still obtain a £7 pdf rather than a £11 paper copy if tick the button. If they can't locate it in their register they will refund. The index entry has been verified by 2 people but if look at the image using the spectacles icon it could be 399, not 299.

Here is the Warwickshire Record Office link in case need to order from there https://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/copycertificates

William Hickin, aged 39 was buried Lapworth Parish [St Mary the Virgin] which does fall under Solihull Reg District. Seem to be 2 entries (my sub lapsed last week) on Ancestry https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/2444/?name=william_hicken&death=1839&count=50&death_x=0-0-0&name_x=1
and 4 on Findmypast Burials https://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/results?datasetname=warwickshire%20burials&firstname=william&lastname=hickin&yearofdeath=1839&yearofdeath_offset=2&place=lapworth&sid=999

Here is the FamilySearch image https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6SK9-5G9?i=379&cc=1462403&cat=145289 as usual adds little, not even an occupation.

Thanks for this help, I’ll order and keep my fingers crossed. I have William’s burial record but thought I’d order his death registration out of interest, because he died comparatively young. He was in fact the second husband that his wife Ann lost in quite a short space of time.
