Dorset Family History Society's Monthly Online Zoom Meeting
« on: Thursday 27 May 21 20:39 BST (UK) »
Dorset Family History Society is hosting an on-line Zoom talk on Tuesday 15th June 2021 from 7.30pm - 9.15pm (approx.)

ON-LINE SPEAKER IS Dr. PENNY WALTERS talking on ‘SEARCHING FOR IRISH ANCESTORS’.

Dr Penny Walters will give a comprehensive talk to aid those looking for Irish Ancestors. She will look at current and historical maps of Ireland. Since the early 17th century there have been four Provinces of Ireland: Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster. The Irish word for this territorial division, cúige, means ‘fifth part’ and indicates that there were once five; however, in the medieval period there were more. There are thirty two counties in Ireland (twenty six in the Republic of Ireland and six in Northern Ireland).

Many people, perhaps as high as 70 million claim Irish heritage, so many of these are keen to research their Irish roots. This talk will look at the information that is available in the absence of a number of key Irish census records. The talk covers Irish place names and surnames; how to order BMD certificates; and which Census fragments are available. The 1837 Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary will be revealed, and how to think laterally from clues within the detailed place descriptions. The usefulness of dog licences, railways and Facebook groups will be included. The invaluable census ‘substitute,’ Griffiths Valuation will be explained. Utilising clues and useful information from Who Do You Think You are?'s Irish themed celebrity reveals will be explored. An explanation of DNA testing, with Ancestry’s new detailed regions will also be explored, along with DNA matching and collaboration. A description of a number of diaspora journeys will be shown with maps, interesting heritage centres and quirky observations. However, looking for ancestors abroad could be seen as cultural appreciation or cultural appropriation.

Zoom sign-in from 7.15 pm (UK time).

Society Members who have consented to receive information by e-mail will find a meeting invitation link, and how to donate the £3 admission, in the E-News sent about 4 days before the meeting.

Those who do not receive E-News, or who are not Society Members, are welcome to join this meeting and should access the talk by emailing liaison@dorsetfhs.org.uk from the week before. An invitation will be sent out with sign in details of how to sign in to Zoom from 7.15pm on the night for a 7.30 start.

The Society would welcome a voluntary contribution of £3 towards the cost via our website.  Thank you.
