Who was Dr. Gideon B. Smith?
« on: Friday 28 May 21 14:33 BST (UK) »
A Maryland doctor was the first to map all the different cicada broods that pop up.  Who was Dr. Gideon B. Smith?

“I would hope someone in Baltimore, some descendant, would recognize that this is their great-great-grandfather,” said Kritsky. “Maybe they have a box of Smith stuff. I’d love to see a portrait or daguerreotype of this guy.”

He appears to pop up in the US census of 1830 and 1850.  That census suggests his birthplace was Massachusetts.

Looks like he may have married twice, first in 1826 and second in 1833.

This is just from Family Search.

Am I right in thinking you live in the US Erato?  If so you may be able to find out more.

Yes, I'm an American but I don't live there.  It's Professor Kritsky who is looking for a portrait of Dr. Smith.  I have enjoyed reading about him and about his work with cicadas and silk worms. but he is in no way connected to my family tree.  I wonder what he go up to in 1848?
