Carol,

I have deleted the message about his death as I made a mistake and typed the story of another man with a similar name.  He was actually killed on a supply drop to the Warsaw uprising on 28th August 1944 and was buried as unidentified but his body was later exhumed and returned to Poland for reburial over 60 years later

That is distinctly possible!  That is why I think his uniform may be the key to the nystery

Carol,

I also posted the photo on a German Army website and found that the lanyard he is wearing is German Army and has been in use since 1894.  The lanyard differs from others in that it starts on top of the shoulder with a gold, silver or bronze medallion and is actually an award for shooting proficiency.  It is called a  Schützenschnur.

Unfortunately I had quite a cold reception on the site and they kept repeating "Google is your friend" so I don't think I will go back there.  They did not attempt to make any identification of the actual uniform and I did not feel welcome there.  So I will look elsewhere as I am no further forward with the dating.

I have put this on Rootschat military site.

Is it a dress uniform?  The lanyard makes it look like one but that is a shooting award.  In any case, I have no idea of his rank.

If he was strapped for cash he wouldn't be an Officer.

I don't know his rank but I don't think he was an officer
