John Lea burial place
« on: Saturday 29 May 21 08:40 BST (UK) »
I would like to know, if possible, where John Lea was buried in 1885. He lived in Rugby at the time he died, but had probably not been there long. He had previously farmed at Sudbury in Derbyshire. His wife was from Nottingham and went back there after he died. John was born in Shenton in Market Bosworth parish, Leicestershire, and it was ironically just close to that town that he was killed by a train, April 1885.

(I’m not searching for details of a grave plot, just a burial place, to close off a branch of the tree.)

There is a burial record for a John Lea buried on 9th April 1885 at General Cemetery, Nottingham.

As his wife was from Nottingham could he have been buried there?

Many thanks, yes, I’m confident that it is, because he died on April 6th, so the standard 3 day gap between death and burial. Maybe John and wife Sarah had already decided before he died that if anything happened to him his wife would return to Nottingham. This burial suggests that she probably didn’t remain in Rugby for long after his death.

Marion Lea was baptised 4th August 1885 at Holy Trinity, Rugby, daughter of John and Sarah Ann Lea of Clifton Road. Her father was a railway timber manager. On the 1891 census Marion and brother Edwin Herbert are with their maternal grandmother in Basford, Nottinghamshire. Her mother Sarah Ann is in Nottingham with daughters Sarah Louisa and Ada Mary.

Thanks a lot for this further info. I hadn’t found the baptism of Marion, which obviously took place some four months after John was killed. Also, though I had found Marion and Edwin Herbert in Nottingham in 1891, I hadn’t located Sarah and Ada in the same census.
