St Francis maternity hospital, govan
« on: Sunday 30 May 21 04:13 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone ,Can anyone tell me whether the hospital records for the St Francis hospital still exist. My son was born there in  July 1964 and his birth cert does not record the name of the hospital, only the address 44 Merryland Street .  Were the  babies born there delivered by midwives or by doctors? I am just curious as I have no clear memory of the actual birth, but the care was excellent and the staff were very  solicitous.  This enquiry has been  kindled by watching many episodes of Call the Midwife!
Regards Orkrad

Start with https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/archivespecialcollections/nhsgreaterglasgowandclyde/ but you may find that you are not allowed to see the records because they are less than 100 years old.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Okrad

I think it was owned and run by the nursing side of the The Franciscan Sisters Minoress. The hospital opened as St Francis Maternity Hospital from 1949.

A few details here:

http://www.franciscansm.org/history
https://historic-hospitals.com/gazetteer/glasgow/

From here http://discuss.glasgowguide.co.uk/Govan-t5416.html:

... In the 70s it was a private maternity home then it became an old peoples home and then it was sold to developers and is now private villas.

Other people sharing their experience here:

Thanks Forfarian. I checked out the archives you mention but the name St Francis Maternity Home   doesnt appear.  It also seems that the records are closed for 75years.
Thanks also Monica L. I read all the information with interest. I did know about the Glasgow online site and read most of the comments and reminiscences. However it doesnt seem like I am going to be able to access the information I wanted.  Best regards to you both. Orkrad

What about the Catholic church archives? Start with the Archdiocesan office http://www.rcag.org.uk/ - they should know where these records are.

You may have had this answered by now, but Montrose Nursing Home is where I was born in 1944, and that address seems to be 44 Merryland Road.
