Surname suggestion please?
« on: Tuesday 01 June 21 19:09 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to trace someone who is on the 1861 census, without any luck and I'm wondering if it's because the name is transcribed wrongly.

It's transcribed as James Mullager, b. about 1856 and living at 119 St Johns Place in Hull. It says he was born in Hull.

Unfortunately I can't find a matching birth record or death record, or any mention of a James Mullager in the newspapers. The surname 'Mullager' doesn't even seem to be that common in Hull, at least not in the 1860s.

I'm wondering if it's Milager? I would appreciate your thoughts.

;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

By searching with wildcards at FreeBMD, and for vaguely similar names at YorkshireBMD, I've found a James MULLIGAN born in 1856 in the Sculcoates district.

The GRO index shows the mother's maiden name as GOLLICHER, which I suspect might be GALLAGHER (or variant). Since the 1861 census has him as a grandson to an Ann Galagher, this seems worth considering.

In 1871 he might be in Manchester as Mulligan, stepson to Anthony Flemming (married to an Ann) - RG10/4028 fo129 p13. These three were born in Hull, and there were 4 other children - 2 born in Sheffield and 2 in Manchester.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I've known people from the north of England with the surname Mullinger.  Not sure if this is of any help but might be worth checking out.

Could this be parents marriage ?
