Some other things on Findmypast:-

His baptism in Leicester in 1850 gives an extra middle name of Cornwell, the previous name of his shop in Leicester. Also gives his birth as 25th November 1845, abode Nottingham.

His marriage licence and certificate in 1873 to Elizabeth Neale.

GWR shares in 1873 which give Elizabeth's address as 9 Victoria Road, Leicester.

Found the 1881 census for William Barton Marshal, his wife Elisabeth nee Neale and William Cornwell Marshall aged 3 yrs. 
So the family did move to Hastings after the bankruptcy.  Elisabeth ran some sort of lodging house, as can be seen in the census.
