Surname of the groom, please
« on: Thursday 03 June 21 15:31 BST (UK) »
Thomas ?? married one of my distant relatives in 1693, Wem, Shropshire.

FindMyPast has it as Levar  but I'm not convinced, especial the last letter.

Any other ideas, please. I've tried to include a few other examples of letters in the snip

Thanks

The letter at the end of the word is ‘r, I’m sure. It’s the same as the ‘r’ in ‘maried’.

I think it’s Levar.

The last letter is entirely typical of a C17th r.  It would be of concern if it didn't look like this.

JenB has pointed out one example.  It's also seen in Edward and his surname, which I think is probably Barnes rather than Bannes.

The third letter could be v or u.  In context, it's likely to be v.

Thanks, Jennifer. I was thrown by 'maried' and thought it was maybe rr. Edward Barnes, below, has the same form of r!

Cross posted HD - single and double rs apear to be the same.

...single and double rs apear to be the same.

They are all singular in the clip.  A double-r wouldn't look the same as a single.

I was referring to maried!

Thanks, Jennifer. I was thrown by 'maried'

Ancestry has it as Leuar . Nothing after this at the moment, for either of them, using ******s

Add - 3 transcriptions has it a Leuar and 1 has Levar.  I shall leave it as either.

Thank you both.
