Whiteheads Kelleth or Kellet & Flakebridge near Orton
« on: Friday 04 June 21 10:28 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone knows the history of Kelleth (or Kellet as it is spelt on some wills) near Orton.

I first came across it in wills from the 1600's from my Whitehead family and thought it was a farm but looking more it seems to be a hamlet. It is difficult to find any history as the searches just seem to show up B&B's.

Would love to know more about it. Also of Flakebridge which is just close by as that is mentioned in wills too.

Thank you

I don't know anything about the history of the place, however you can see Kelleth on this 1848 map. There is a Kellethrigg House - not sure which came first, the House or the town. Also Flakebridge which does appear to be a farm.

This gazetteer has many references over the  years including a map from 1579 which includes the name Kellathe and "Building, symbol for a hamlet, which may or may not have a nucleus."

Thank you very much for your replies and locations of both and the photo.
I agree Kelleth does look to be a hamlet.
Flakebridge seems to have two farms one 'Flakebridge' and one 'High Flakebridge' :(. It only mentions that he was from Flakebridge so think it must be just that  :-\

Any other information gratefully received.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

I did mean to add though that there is this reference to Flakebridge and High Flakebridge

"(28). Flakebridge, house about 3˝ m. S.E. of the church, has remains of original windows and a doorway with a scrolled head on the lintel.
Condition—Poor.

(29). High Flakebridge, house 300 yards S. of (28), was built late in the 17th or early in the 18th century.
Condition—Poor."

There are also these from newspapers: some death notices after about 1835; and an advertisment for the sale of the Estate in 1843 which gives a description.

Wow! Thankyou.

The  name of Edmund is passed down through the Whitehead family from Flakebridge from the end of 1600's.

That is interesting about the sale of both properties.

I am in the middle of ordering o wills from that era which MAY help.

Thank you very much. Much appreciated.

Judy

PS May get more information from the Manor Records too.

You may already have this information, not sure if he is related to your WHITEHEADs -  there is a George WHITEHEAD of Orton mentioned in "An abstract of the sufferings of the people call'd Quakers for the testimony of a good conscience ..."

(pg 659)

(There are other mentions too in this book if you use the search function.)

Thanks again. Will have a look through that.
Yes I had seen about him but can't as yet place him. But he comes from very close by where my Whiteheads come from and the era. It is a hotbed of them around that area.  :D

Maybe when I get the wills sent it may help put the families together - ordered some I think may be relevant yesterday.
