Afflecks in Ayr
« on: Friday 04 June 21 21:14 BST (UK) »
This is what I know about my great great great grandmother's family in Ayrshire:
Annie Affleck, born April 1864, married George Jeffrey Aitkenhead in Ontario, Canada. An orphan. Had siblings: John b1854, William Barr b1862, Grace 1866-67, Andrew 1870-71. All baptized to Ann Affleck (b.~1830/31 Colmonell) in Ballantrae. Ann was living with John in 1861 as a washer woman and in 1871 with Wm, Annie and Andrew (also washerwoman). This would signify Ann didn't have money, and having 5 illegitimate kids doesn't help. Ann died in 1873, death was registered by her son John, John did not list a father, but the mother was Ann McKenna (deceased). Ann was living in 1841 with Ann McKenna b1791 and William Barr b1820, a dyker. (On William's death record, Ann McKenna is also given as his mother, so it looks like Ann Affleck and William Barr are half siblings, Wm was baptized as William Dunbar in 1819, only father's last name was given)
In 1851 Ann Affleck was living with David McKenna b1767 and his daughter Jean b1806. David married Mary Drynan in 1793, so the Ann McKenna in 1841 probably isn't David's daughter.
How can I get back further on this side, Ann McKenna was dead before 1862 (per William Barrs death) and Ann Afflecks unkown father died before 1841. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Trekcuber, I have had a good look at this, and understand your problems.

Regarding Ann McKENNA (McKINNA)
Note : in the 1841 census, ages were rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5.  So even though Ann McKenna is listed as age 50, she could have been born between 1787 and 1791.

It certainly seems possible that Ann McKenna is somehow related to David KcKenna b.1767. It would seem likely that Ann Affleck is with her grand-father in the 1851 census, even though that relationship is not given.
Some possibilities to consider/ and look into:
1/    Ann McKenna was a child not from the marriage with Mary DRYNAN, but was perhaps from a previous marriage. I notice there is a marriage between a David McKINNA and Margaret NICOL in 1785, also in Dailly. Perhaps David’s marriage record to Mary Drynan would indicate if it was a second marriage for him?

2/    Ann McKenna could have been an illegitimate child. This is where the Kirk Sessions suggested above by “ColC” may be useful. They take some time to read through, but I can be well worth it. Dailly kirk sessions are also available.

Regarding the birth of William DUMBAR  in 1819 Colmonell to Ann McKenna, unfortunately there is a gap in the kirk sessions from 1817 to 1822. It is likely the father was also named William. I did notice from a quick look that Ann McKinna appears in relation to another child at the start of the 1822 sessions.

Thanks for looking into this everyone!
Yes, that does appear to be Davids baptism, I'll definitely look around though regarding that!
