Did Lees Street become Lee Street?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at some records on the 1891 and 1901 census for a Grayton family. Across both of these census (censi? censuses?) they are living in two rooms at 27 Lees Street in Bishopwearmouth.

I can't find a Lees Street on modern maps, but I can find a Lee Street. Is that the same one?

The 1901 street index that accompanies the census only show Lee Street. There doesn't appear to be a Lees street. Could it be a transcription error?

In 1901, 27 Lee Street is occupied by the Stothard family. So it's not your family.

Lees is just my interpretation of the writing, so it's likely to be my human error rather than a transcription error. I'll try to attach the images below, I think I'll have to do it one at a time.

This is the one from 1901.

If you look at the previous street in the 1891 census, you will see that it is Lawrence Street.

The L of Lawrence bears no resemblance to the first letter of the street that your family lived in.

Looking a bit further on nearby streets in that census I also see Hendon Road, Nicholson St, Cousin Street and Wear Street. Here they are:

so your *ees (?) Street will be in the vicinity.

Not all streets are named, but you might be able to find another map which does name it, now that you have an idea where it is/was.

I don’t know what your mystery street name is, but I’m sure someone will.
