Norfolk research info
« on: Saturday 05 June 21 08:49 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I’m planning a trip to Norfolk (and a little bit of Suffolk) for later this year – Covid permitting.

This branch of the family I have not really spent a lot of time researching and I know little of the area, well apart from a trip in the late 80s to Great Yarmouth for the first holiday with the girlfriend now wife.

Based on what I know so far, is it possible to located where these ancestors lived? Farms, houses, streets etc.?

Here is a list of the people, dates and parishes I have to work with:

Judith Nicholls:
Bap: 28 Jan 1798 St Peter’s, Weston, Suffolk
Father: William Nicholls
Mother: Elizabeth Thirkettle

William Nicholls
Bap: 10 Jun 1759 St. Margaret, Cantley, Norfolk
Father: Robert Nichols
Mother: Mary Dawes

Mar: 21 Jan 1783 Burlingham, St. Edmund, Norfolk
SP: Elizabeth Thirkettle

Elizabeth Thirkettle
Bap: 20 Jun 1764 All Saints, Beighton, Norfolk
Father: Richard Thirkettle
Mother: Mary Shrieve

Richard Thirkettle
Marriage: 7 Nov 1763 • Upton, Norfolk, England
Spouse: Mary Shrieve

Mary Shrieve
Bap: 13 Jan 1745 • Upton, Norfolk, England
Father: Nicholas Shreive
Mother: Elizabeth ?

Nicholas Shrieve
Bap: 10 FEB 1701 Stokesby, Norfolk
Father: Johannes (John) Shreeve
Mother: Elizabetha

Martinus Shreeve
Marriage: 8 Oct 1657 Pockthorpe, Norwich, Norfolk
Spouse: Thomasina Palmer

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I followed in my ancestors footsteps in Norfolk and Suffolk a few years ago.  Apart from one house in Gt.Yarmouth, most of the other properties had disappeared.  We did have a good time though, searching church graveyards for ancestors' graves and visiting small villages that we wouldn't otherwise have gone to.

Thanks.

I have located areas and roads of my Sussex ancestors lived in the past but know of no resources in the Norfolk area that may help.

Looking forward to seeing the churches.

If anyone can provide advice I'd be grateful.

You might possibly find a reference to Martinus Shreeve (m1657) in the hearth tax records

but I don't know how much information these contain.

Parish registers rarely include occupations or domiciles, so unless your ancestors left wills I think all you will be able to identify are the churches where they were baptised, married, and buried.

If Judith Nicholls was alive after 1837, her death registration and censuses could give details of precisely where she lived and died.

For my Norfolk ancestors the only photographs I took were of church exteriors, altars, and fonts (no legible gravestones exist) - I decided it wasn't worth me taking pictures of the scenery as I had no idea if it was the same in my ancestors' times.
