Owen Hughes - Hugh Hughes - Armagh - Coatbridge
« on: Saturday 05 June 21 13:41 BST (UK) »
My grandfather was born in 1886 according to most documents I have.  My family always knew him as Owen Hughes.  His passport and other documents state that he was born in County Armagh, Ireland.  I cannot find traces of him there BUT did find records that seem to be his.  I think he may have been named Hugh Hughes at birth - named after his maternal grandfather.  His marriage documents and death certificate have the names of his parents, Mary McKenna and John Hughes.  (I am inferring that he was called Owen rather than Hugh.)  I am able to follow the family of John and Mary McKenna from Armagh to Coatbridge, Scotland, which is also where my grandfather lived as a tube worker before emigrating to Pennsylvania to stay with Andrew McShane and later moving to New York where my grandmother, Jessie Bennett Hughes, and his children met him later on.

A discrepancy I have found is that the family of John and Mary moved to Coatbridge before their son Hugh was born.  I don't know if that means I have the wrong family attached to my grandfather or if he recorded his birthplace incorrectly for some reason - intentionally or accidentally.

I welcome any connections or thoughts to my research on Owen (Hugh?) Hughes.

JessieJessie,

Hello and welcome.  :)

Help me out, for I'm struggling to discern from your post, the information you know is robust, from that which may be more speculative.

So for example, if the marriage and death records are definitely him, how do you know this? Were they actual paper records belonging to him?   Can you provide any further information from these records, were they Scottish?

Also... 'His passport and other documents state that he was born in County Armagh' - have you seen these and what are the 'other documents'?

Hughes and McKenna are not uncommon in Co. Armagh, so I'm just trying to avoid red herrings.

Is this the family you find in the Coatbridge area by 1891? All the children showing as born in Old Monkland. Like some with an Irish birth place as I can't easily see Scottish births so far for the older children:

Jns Hughes 47 Blast Furnace Man b. Ireland
Mary Hughes 46 b. Ireland
James Hughes 22
John Hughes 11
Edward Hughes 8
Hugh Hughes 5
Francis Hughes 8 months
Francis Cullen 37 boarder
Robert Goodwin 40 Brother b. Bothwell, Lanarkshire

Address: 10 South Row, Coatbridge

This family are still in Coatbridge for 1901. The transcript I am looking at does not show marital status but is John Snr widowed by now?

John Hughes 34 (age wrong isn't it) Blast Furnace Keeper
John Hughes 21
Edward Hughes 18
Hugh Hughes 15 Shop Assistant (spirit)
Frank Hughes 1
Hugh G Stirling 38 Son In Law
Catherine Stirling29
John G Stirling 4 grandchild
Jane G Stirling 9 Months grandchild
Frank Cullan 52 Boarder
Ellen Regan 29 Serv

Address: Summerlee 10 South Row

This doesn't feel like the right family from what you mention  :-\

There are these two births www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ7R-TR7 and www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQPT-LQ7

I think it may just be a co-incidence with the surnames. Often a number couples with similar names having children at the same time...

Owen and Jessie Bennet married in Scotland? https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/LDZ5-78T/jessie-bennett-1891-1965 From one of the linked documents, Owen gave his birth date as 17 March 1886 in Armagh.

What did it say regarding his parents on his marriage reg? Father's name John or James and his occupation? Parents alive or deceased? Any family names on the Hughes side for witnesses to the marriage?

For anyone with access I think this is Jessie's family tree, with documents, on Ancestry.
