Using phone as satnav.

I have an android phone, not the most expensive model.
I don't use mobile data often ,it's mostly for calls and wifi as I don't have a contract.

Ive started group walking on footpaths and tracks in the hills. The last place had no phone signal.
Is there a simple map programme I can use to find my location off line.
It would be useful to know where I actually am and how far to my planned destination.

Also I would really need to know how to use it.

What do I do.
I do use it for finding general directions and places but that's all so far.

Ordinance Survey have a mobile app that you can use, but I'm not 100% sure it would do exactly what you are asking for. I have used it in the past for finding walking routes.

Thanks everybody, I will take a look at them all, so  far the Google maps definately seems to be the simplest,  Viewranger certainly has a lot going on.

Have you considered a sat nav, most of them can be used in walking or cycling mode.  You can pick them up for £20 -£40 on * Bay.  They come with pre-installed maps, charger etc so you wouldn't have to purchase data. Its a cheaper option worth considering.

Many of the wilder, upland or remote areas don't have a phone signal so if you are going into such areas you need to take an OS map with you - and know how to read it.
