What is this street in Monkwearmouth?
« on: Sunday 06 June 21 20:05 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to find the name of this street which was in Monkwearmouth in 1861. It's on the census as the street where a William Benson was living.

I think it's Marducke Street, but I can't find anything that corresponds to that online either today or on historic maps, so I must be wrong.

I did wonder if it was a shortened version of Marmaduke, but I can't find that either.

Thank you
;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

It looks like Hardwicke Street to me.

Facebook page for Sunderland Antiquarian Society has a photo of the Pear Tree Pub on Hardwicke Street.

Added: Hardwicke Street was located where the North Sands Business Centre now stands, near St Peters Church and just off Dame Dorothy Street, Monkwearmouth.

Looks like Hardwicke Street to me.  Coincidentally, earlier this evening I was looking at a map of Sunderland to work out where Lombard Street was, wherein lived my 2 x great grandfather who was a coal miner at Wearmouth Colliery.

Thank you very much everyone.

I really wouldn't have guessed that, I was convinced it was an 'M'.
