Prison record - Arson of certain a heath?
« on: Sunday 06 June 21 21:47 BST (UK) »
What could Arson of certain a heath mean? Obviously it will be somewhat arson related, could it be of grassland to damage land? He got 9 months for what he did, this was in 1883.

Thankyou :)

Sounds like a bit of mis-transcription to me...maybe 'certain a' is actually the name of the heath? It would be good to see the original.

Thanks for your replies, hopefully the photo uploads! I did eventually find a newspaper article and it was him being accused of purposely setting land which belonged to a Major on fire with a match.

Maybe 'of certain' was a term (legal or local) for deliberate. Writing is clear enough.

Very well could be, or also that they had no doubt about it.He did admit to it but stated it was an accident...the woman he was with at the time had a whole string of offences from 10  years previously up until then and aliases which were noted on every prison record for her so she was a wrong un to be with!
